Words I Like

I'm digging the Kiwi accent and vocabulary. I'm trying to work it into my linguistic arsenal, though it's taking some time. But here are some things I'm enjoying saying.

1) No worries. I already said that in the States, but I'm particularly liking it now that it's common.

2) Bloke. How can you not like it if everyone's a bloke?

3) Bugger. My absolute favorite. (Pronounce it with enthusiasm--"Ah, tha's a real bugga!")

I forgot an important one: "Sweet as."

I think it derives from another saying that Kiwis are fond of: "Good as gold." But they just say "Sweet as." It's something like the NZ version of "It's all good."

And when they do, they don't draw out the final 's', so you think they're saying "Sweet ass!" As in, you've got a nice bum. Or fanny. Except you can't say "fanny" here, because in Kiwiese, that's another way of saying the word that sounds like the US way of saying "Kant." (See the post below on that one.)

Here's another one I just learned and immediately liked: "knackered." Tired, run down, burnt out.

#6: "On the piss." A great variation on "pissed" for "drunk." Which has meant that I can't say "I'm pissed" for "I'm angry," though I can say "I'm pissed off," and that will translate. In any case, next time you get drunk, remember that you're on the piss.

#7: "Winge." To winge is to whine. And you can modify it in all the same ways: "Quit winging!" "You're such a winger!"
